Introduction

Thoracic Surgery at Holy Family Hospital - includes a variety of operations in the chest (thorax) that includes lungs, chest wall (rib cage), esophagus (food pipe), diaphragm and mediastinum (area between your lungs).

Thoracic Surgery procedures: We perform lung resection (lobectomy), Pneumonectomy, segmentectomy, Wedge resection, chest wall reconstruction, esophageal removal /repair, diaphragmatic repair and removal of diseases in mediastinum, empyema management and management of complex pleural effusion.

Thoracic surgery can be done in 2 ways: Traditional Open Surgery Methods and Minimally Invasive Techniques.

Traditional Open Surgery Method

Open surgery is generally opted when a large portion of the inner chest or the lung is needed to be seen. Both for removing a part of the lung by Lobectomy or removing the entire lung by Pneumonectomy,. This traditional method of surgery is generally opted when minimally invasive surgery is not feasible due to disease / patient related factors.

Minimally Invasive Surgeries – related factors

Video-assisted Thoracic Surgery: The entire operation is done with key hole technique which avoids a long cut in the chest is done using Thoracoscopy. The tube is inserted by a small incision in the chest. Special associated instruments are also inserted in the body. Through the camera, the doctors will run the operation in accordance with the continuous video from the Thoracoscope in the OT. It helps in shorter Hospital stay and less pain and smaller scars.
