Overview

The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Holy Family Hospital specializes in diagnosing and treating respiratory conditions affecting the lungs, airways, pleura, mediastinum, diaphragm, and chest wall. Our team of expert pulmonologists also manages conditions that indirectly affect breathing, such as sleep apnea and neuromuscular disorders. With the increase in air pollution, smoking, and urbanization, respiratory issues are becoming more common. Patients experiencing symptoms like persistent cough, difficulty breathing, chest congestion, blood in phlegm, or sleep disturbances due to snoring can rely on our specialists for accurate diagnosis, comprehensive care and effective treatment.

Key Services Offered
  • Comprehensive Respiratory Care: Our department provides consultations for a wide range of respiratory conditions including daily outpatient clinics (OPDs) and expert care for inpatients in both wards and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Advanced Diagnostic Services: We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic tests, including pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and medical thoracoscopy to diagnose conditions like asthma, COPD, tuberculosis, lung cancer, etc.
  • Sleep Disorders Treatment: Our specialized sleep lab conducts polysomnography (sleep studies) to diagnose and manage sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy, and other sleep-related issues.
Procedures Offered
  • Bronchoscopy: A minimally invasive procedure used to examine the airways and lungs. It helps to diagnose and treat conditions such as foreign body obstructions, tumors, and infections. This outpatient procedure typically involves topical anesthesia or light sedation. Additional procedures like bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), lung biopsy, and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) are also performed as needed.
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS): This advanced technique uses a bronchoscope equipped with an ultrasound probe to evaluate masses and lymph nodes in and around the lungs. EBUS is a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery for diagnosing conditions like lung cancer and mediastinal lymphadenopathy.
  • Medical Thoracoscopy: A procedure using a thoracoscope to examine the pleura (the space between the outer and inner lung coverings) and to diagnose and treat pleural effusions and other related conditions.
  • Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT): These tests assess lung function and help diagnose conditions like asthma, COPD, and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Our lab is equipped with advanced spirometry and diffusion lung volume study tools.
  • Intercostal Drainage Tube (ICD): A procedure where a tube is inserted into the chest to drain air, fluid, or blood from the pleural space, helping the lungs to re-expand and restore proper function.
Facilities & Equipment
  • Pulmonary Function Lab: Our lab features advanced diagnostic tools, including spirometry with diffusion and lung volume studies, providing precise assessments of respiratory function for conditions like asthma, COPD, and interstitial lung disease (ILD).
  • Endoscopy Suite: Equipped with flexible bronchoscopes and a semi-rigid thoracoscope, our suite is designed for advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including EBUS and medical thoracoscopy.
  • Sleep Lab: Our advanced sleep lab provides comprehensive polysomnography (sleep studies) to diagnose and manage sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy, ensuring patients receive the best possible care.
