Psychiatry department is one of the oldest departments of the hospital and for the last ten year it is registered with state mental health authority under mental health Act (1987).
Dr Sudhir K Khandelwal has joined the Holy Family Hospital recently after his superannuation from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where he served for more than 32 years as a senior faculty member, and retired as Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry and Chief, National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Besides being a member of various committees of the AIIMS, he was also the Chief Superintendent of Hostels.
He has been former Chairperson and a member of the Governing Board member of the Global Network for Mental and Neurological Health Research & International Consortium for Mental Health Policy and Services (both International organizations funded by the World Bank, WHO, and Governments of UK and Australia). He is a Board member and formerly chairperson of National Board of Richmond Fellowship Society for Psychosocial Rehabilitation.
He has been recipient of various awards instituted by the Indian Psychiatric Society, Delhi Psychiatric Society, and the Indian Association of Social Psychiatry. He has published more than 120 papers in national and international journals and as book chapters.
Dr Khandelwal is an outdoor enthusiast and avid trekker; he has trekked to different parts of Himalayas. He also successfully completed the Kailash-Mansarovar expedition, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Govt of India. As a member of the Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (Ministry of Earth Sciences, GOI), he spent five months in Antarctica.
He has worked in different cultures of the world, namely, Nepal, Ethiopia and England as faculty member and consultant psychiatrist.
Department organized Schizophrenia Day for the benefit of caregivers and student nurses, some hospital wards and OPD Nurses were rewarded for their services.
Department provides indoor and outpatient services to patients suffering from various Psychiatric illnesses including Anxiety, Depression, Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia, Obsessive, Compulsive Disorder dementia, Psychosexual disorders, Drug & Alcoholic Deaddiction, Marital and Relationship Problem Psychosomatic illnesses etc.
